The Ancient Olympics

Marking the Olympic Games’ return to Athens in 2004, this programme reveals the real story of the ancient games, for both lovers of sport and history. Using a powerful mixture of original historical research, reconstructions and contemporary and archive footage from the Games, the dramatic differences and similarities between the original ancient pagan ritual and the modern Games are highlighted.

Part 1. Death or Glory
Part 2. Playing to Win

Part 1. Death or Glory - First instalment of a two-part documentary looking back at the origins of the Olympic Games 2,500 years ago and the cultural forces which shaped them in Ancient Greece. The athletic competition to celebrate the god Zeus gave rise to familiar forms of ritual behaviour, hero worship, gamesmanship and substance abuse, all reflected in a programme which examines the ideals that surrounded the event
Part 2. Playing to Win - No event in the Ancient World was comparable to the Olympic Games. They were held every four years and without interruption for nearly 12 centuries. When Greek culture and influence were at their height, the Games drew tens of thousands of people from Greek colonies along the length of the Mediterranean and the shores of the Black Sea; from the future lands of Russia to Spain.
